Note

18 drawings by Antoine Morillon of ancient ruins in Capua and elsewhere. The drawings are in pen and ink with grey wash. Morillon was in Italy between 1551 and 1553, when he returned to the Netherlands (Grove Dictionary of Art).

Note

A pencil ms. note at the front of the volume describes these drawings as copies of drawings by Pirro Ligorio (ca. 1513-1583), noting the similarity between no. XVII and Bn10.53, drawn by Ligorio.

Note

For full description of each sketch, see Jean Sampson's catalogue of the Topham drawings. These 18 were removed from album Bm9, and are listed as the first items in that album. Each drawing has a 17th century caption, some of which have been trimmed off by the binder.
