Armorial bookplate of Eton College.

Provenance

Armorial bookplate of the duke of Gloucester (royal arms with a label of five points, the centre bearing a fleur-de-lys etc etc). On the rear pastedown is another royal bookplate, bearing the initials WF, and therefore possibly belonging to Prince William Frederick, duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh (1776-1834). The binding is in the style of John Brindley, who bound books for the duke's grandparents when prince and princess of Wales.

Contemporary English Harleian binding in the style of John Brindley; red morocco; gold tooled wide border roll with corner pieces, and centrepiece composed of smaller punches; gold tooled roll along board edges and turn-in; gold tooling on spine, with black morocco labels in alternate compartments; five raised bands.

This copy does not have the two folded plates of examples, but does have an engraving bound as frontispiece. This engraving by Hogarth, called "Columbus breaking the egg" was first cut to be the subscription ticket for Analysis of Beauty. See R. Paulson, Hogarth's Graphic Works, pp. 156-57.
