"The first edition of Hieroglyphic Tales consisted of only 6 copies which were printed in 1785 at Strawberry Hill. The book was reprinted, with alterations and excisions, in Walpole's collected works edited by Miss Berry in 1798. The text here followed is that of the first edition. Some notes, written by Horace Walpole in his copy of the first-sheets of the first edition, now in the British Museum, have been added" -- colophon.
