Reid looks at nature for inspiration: stone, weathered wood and sand all feature in his work. He works with kiln-cast glass, using a variety of moulding techniques to cast the glass. His current work uses optical glass as it offers him the ‘purity’ he seeks. Firing can take up to three weeks in order to achieve the thickness and depth he seeks. He then carries out ‘cold work’ including grinding, polishing, and sandblasting. The pieces evolve and change as he responds to what has come out of the kiln. Chance plays its part as working with the unexpected can be both creative and disastrous. Reid states that, “I don’t open the kiln if I am having a bad day.” Reid is based in Southwest England.
